Paramount Global makes sixty million dollars’ settlement in lawsuit
The media company, which owns CBS, revealed the settlement on Tuesday, noting that the funds will cover the legal expenses of the plaintiffs and will be directed toward Trump's envisioned presidential library. Neither Trump nor his co-plaintiff, Texas Representative Ronny Jackson, will receive any personal compensation from the deal.
Reports indicate that no apology is included in the agreement, though the resolution marks a notable turn in the legal battle. Some employees at 60 Minutes—the CBS news program that aired the controversial interview—were reportedly unhappy with the settlement, viewing it as yielding to what they described as repeated efforts by the Trump administration to pressure the media.
The lawsuit, filed last October, claimed that CBS News edited Harris’s comments on the Biden administration's policy toward Israel in a way that distorted the original context. Segments of the interview were broadcast on both Face the Nation and 60 Minutes, prompting Trump to argue that the portrayal damaged his campaign.
Harris ultimately lost the presidential election in November.
CBS News defended the editorial choices, stating that the segment was shortened due to time constraints in accordance with common newsroom practices. At the time, the full transcript was not released.
As part of the settlement terms, Paramount announced that upcoming 60 Minutes interviews with presidential candidates will include published transcripts. Redactions will only be made when required by legal obligations or national security considerations.
