A no-confidence motion against Von der Leyen is scheduled soon
Piperea, who introduced the motion, announced Thursday that it had passed the required procedural step through the Conference of Presidents (COP) after gathering 79 supporting signatures. “The motion of No - Confidence against Ursula v d Leyen just gone through the filter of COP (Conference of Presidents). There are 79 signatures. Will be debated next Monday and voted next Thursday in Strasbourg,” he wrote on social media.
The push for a no-confidence vote stems from ongoing accusations that von der Leyen failed to uphold EU transparency rules by refusing to disclose private text exchanges with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during high-stakes COVID-19 vaccine negotiations in 2021. Although the European Court of Justice ruled in favor of a journalist who sought access to the texts, the Commission has yet to release them.
In remarks to Anadolu, Piperea criticized what he described as the Commission's double standards—demanding strict rule-of-law compliance from Eastern European member states while avoiding transparency itself.
Although the vote is unlikely to gain the necessary majority to pass, Piperea maintained that it serves an important purpose. He described it as a strong symbolic act aimed at holding the EU’s leadership accountable.
