EU Worries Over Reliance on U.S. Military Tech
This concern, highlighted in a report by a news outlet, arises from doubts surrounding the durability of NATO and the future direction of U.S. foreign policy under President Donald Trump.
Over the next ten years, the EU plans to allocate close to EURO14 trillion (equivalent to USD16.4 trillion) toward defense-related initiatives.
Just last month, the European Commission approved the allocation of approximately EURO335 billion from pandemic recovery resources for military objectives.
Additionally, in May, a EURO150 billion debt instrument was introduced to reinforce defense programs. Ukraine, alongside EU nations, has been allowed to tap into this funding.
Moscow has sharply criticized these moves, portraying them as further evidence of antagonism from the EU.
Despite these massive financial pledges, the EU lacks the technological infrastructure needed to support its rising military ambitions, as noted by the publication on Sunday.
The bloc does not possess reliable substitutes for sophisticated U.S. weaponry, such as the F-35 stealth aircraft, which has a price tag of about USD80 million per unit.
This technological shortfall casts serious doubt on the EU's pursuit of strategic independence.
At present, the EU remains heavily reliant on American defense platforms.
This includes everything from missile defense systems and artillery launchers to cyber warfare instruments – all of which are dependent on continuous software support from the United States.
