Russia gives new stealth frigate to Indian Navy

(MENAFN) Russia has handed over a new Krivak-class stealth frigate, named Tamal, to the Indian Navy, marking another step in the strengthening defense partnership between the two nations. The multi-role warship was commissioned in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad on Tuesday.

Tamal is the eighth frigate of its class delivered to India over the past 20 years, with its name inspired by the sword wielded by Hindu deities in battle. The ship was built at the Yantar shipyard, with Indian experts from the Warship Overseeing Team stationed in Kaliningrad supervising its construction. Approximately 26% of the frigate’s components are sourced from India.

Key Indian manufacturers involved include BrahMos Aerospace Private Ltd, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Keltron, Nova Integrated Systems (Tata Group), Elcome Marine, and Johnson Controls India, among others, the Indian Navy noted.

Equipped with vertically launched missiles, an enhanced 100mm gun, and advanced electronic warfare systems, the frigate can reach speeds over 30 knots and has a crew complement exceeding 250. It has undergone rigorous sea trials and training in Russia’s challenging maritime environment.

The Tamal also features the BrahMos supersonic missile system, Surface Surveillance Radar, and the HUMSA NG Mk II sonar system. India and Russia’s long-standing military-technical collaboration was recently highlighted by Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov during talks with Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.

Last December, India received another Russian-built stealth frigate, INS Tushil, weighing 3,900 tonnes and measuring 125 meters in length, armed with advanced supersonic cruise and surface-to-air missiles. Additionally, India is constructing two similar Triput-class frigates at the Goa shipyard with Russian technology transfer and design support.
