Poland Reactivates Border Checkpoints with Germany, Lithuania
The Ministry of the Interior and Administration announced the establishment of 52 inspection points along the German border and 13 on the Lithuanian frontier.
These controls are scheduled to remain in place for 30 days, until August 5, with enforcement led by the Border Guard, backed by police and Territorial Defense Force units, according to the ministry.
Konrad Szwed, spokesman for the Border Guard, told media that the inspections will be carried out randomly, prioritizing vans, vehicles carrying multiple passengers, and cars with tinted windows.
"Let's remember that this won't be the type of border control we had before joining the Schengen zone -- there won't be any barriers or fences," Szwed said. "Cars will pass through, and checks will only be conducted selectively based on our risk analysis. If a vehicle is stopped, the driver's and passengers' documents will be checked, as well as the trunk."
To alert the public, a nationwide warning has been issued urging citizens to cooperate with the new border measures, Minister of the Interior and Administration Tomasz Siemoniak stated at a press briefing in Świecko, a key town on the Polish-German border.
"We want to minimize the inconvenience to citizens, including businesspeople and everyone who benefits from good cross-border cooperation. I also count on cooperation from local governments," Siemoniak emphasized.
This move follows Germany’s initiation of border controls with Poland in October 2023, part of a broader crackdown on illegal migration.
