Modi urges BRICS countries to condemn terrorism
Highlighting the recent deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which killed 26 people, Modi described the incident as an attack on India’s “soul, identity, and dignity.” He thanked countries that expressed solidarity, stressing that condemning terrorism should be a matter of principle, not convenience. “There should be no room for silence or support for terrorists for political or personal gain,” he stated.
The BRICS summit communique echoed Modi’s sentiments, strongly condemning the Pahalgam attack and reaffirming a commitment to a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism. The declaration rejected any double standards in fighting terrorism and emphasized cooperation against cross-border terrorism, financing, and safe havens for terrorists.
India has accused Pakistan of being behind the Pahalgam attack and of supporting cross-border terrorism—allegations that led to a major diplomatic and military standoff in May. Pakistan has denied the claims, with Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stating that the country has itself suffered from terrorism, acknowledging past mistakes in supporting militants during foreign-led interventions.
In his speech, Modi also pressed for urgent reforms in international institutions, arguing that the Global South continues to face systemic neglect. “Whether it’s development, resource distribution, or security, the interests of the Global South are often sidelined,” he said, citing areas like climate finance, sustainable growth, and access to technology as examples where promises to the Global South have fallen short.
The joint statement confirmed that India will host the next BRICS summit in 2026.
