Trump Imposes 25 Percent Tariffs on Japan, South Korea
Through letters directed to the South Korean president and Japanese prime minister posted on Truth Social, Trump indicated these new levies will operate independently from existing sectoral tariffs.
The nearly matching correspondence stated: "Please understand that the 25% number is far less than what is needed to eliminate the Trade Deficit disparity we have with your Country."
Trump issued stern warnings that any retaliatory tariff increases from either nation would trigger equivalent American tariff escalations.
"As you are aware, there will be no Tariff if Korea, or companies within your Country, decide to build or manufacture product within the United States and, in fact, we will do everything possible to get approvals quickly, professionally, and routinely -- In other words, in a matter of weeks," Trump detailed in one correspondence.
The president had previously signaled his intention to dispatch letters to approximately twelve nations on Monday.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Monday afternoon that Trump intends to sign an executive order extending the suspension of "reciprocal tariffs" from July 9 through August 1.
Leavitt revealed that roughly 12 additional countries would receive comparable notifications, all of which will be published on Trump's Truth Social platform.
