Protesters Rally in Support of Pro-Palestine Leaders
(MENAFN) On Monday, a collective of individuals organized a protest to show their backing for two prominent leaders of the pro-Palestine movement who have been formally charged by police with offences related to public order.
These charges stem from a march held in January.
The demonstration took place outside Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where the assembled crowd voiced their disapproval of government policies and the handling of pro-Palestine marches and activists by law enforcement.
This occurred as Ben Jamal, director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), and Chris Nineham, vice-chair of the Stop the War Coalition, both attended the court hearing.
Jamal, aged 61, and Nineham, 63, face accusations connected to a protest in central London on January 18, an event during which 77 individuals were detained. Both men were charged with offences related to public order.
At the hearing, the judge granted the defendants unconditional bail and scheduled their trial for February 23 of the following year, to be held at the same court.
Outside the court, pro-Palestinian demonstrators displayed flags and chanted slogans in support of Jamal and Nineham.
Placards carried by the protesters bore messages such as "Stop political policing," "Just who wants to silence us?" and "Proscribe the UK gov't."
A minor group of pro-Israeli demonstrators attempted to disrupt the rally but were prevented from doing so by police officers.
During the event, Nineham addressed the crowd, asserting that efforts to suppress the Palestine solidarity movement have "backfired."
