Swedish diplomat gets handed strong protest note from Russia

(MENAFN) Russia summoned Sweden's Chargé d’Affaires in Moscow on Monday to formally protest a drone-related incident involving its trade mission in Stockholm, describing the event as “another attack” against its diplomatic presence in the country, according to official statements.

The meeting took place at the Russian Foreign Ministry, where the Swedish diplomat, J. Soderberg, was handed a strong protest note. Russian officials demanded that Sweden adhere to its responsibilities under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Authorities in Moscow urged Swedish officials to “identify the perpetrators behind the systematic attacks on Russian foreign missions” and hold them accountable.

The incident, which occurred on July 5, reportedly involved a drone releasing a container of paint onto the grounds of Russia’s trade mission in the Swedish capital.

Russian officials emphasized that repeated targeting of their diplomatic properties casts doubt on Sweden’s capability—or willingness—to provide the security required under international agreements.

“These attacks have continued for over a year, and appeals to Swedish police and the Foreign Ministry have yielded no results,” Russian authorities previously stated, adding that Sweden will be held fully responsible for the consequences.

Since the start of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine in 2022, Russian diplomatic facilities in Stockholm have faced multiple hostile actions, including acts of vandalism.
