Nationwide protests sweep across Kenya
The protests, which unfolded across 17 counties, also saw 37 people arrested and two reported abductions, as noted by the human rights commission.
Commercial activity in many major urban areas came to a standstill, with widespread concerns over theft and property destruction. Reports indicated that looting incidents occurred in six counties, and several government buildings in central Kenya were set on fire, allegedly by criminal groups exploiting the situation.
"The KNCHR has noted that the police have continued to flagrantly disregard a High Court order mandating that all officers managing demonstrations be in official uniform and remain identifiable at all times," stated the commission in a public statement from Nairobi.
Authorities reportedly placed extensive barricades across major highways and entry routes, creating severe disruption to people’s movement. This took place despite a government order issued the previous day, instructing all public servants to report to work as usual.
Due to the roadblocks and transport shutdowns, large numbers of citizens were left stranded. The commission also received multiple emergency calls from individuals unable to reach hospitals or medical facilities, as both public transportation and access by road and rail were heavily impacted.
