EU Parliament Greenlights Bulgaria’s Eurozone Entry for January 2026

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, the European Parliament gave the green light to Bulgaria’s plan to adopt the euro, setting the stage for the nation to officially join the Eurozone starting January 1, 2026.

In a commanding vote, 531 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) approved the proposal, while 69 opposed it and 79 chose to abstain.

The report adopted by the Parliament confirmed that Bulgaria fulfills all the necessary conditions required to transition to the euro currency.

Following formal endorsements by EU member states, Bulgaria will become the Euro area’s 21st member country. The most recent addition was Croatia, which integrated the euro in 2023.

"Today’s vote sends a clear signal: Bulgaria is ready to join the Euro area. All criteria have been met, and this step marks a key milestone towards Bulgaria’s full European integration, for the country and its citizens," said Eva Maydell, the Bulgarian MEP who served as rapporteur on the file, following the vote.

The European Parliament’s recommendation will now be forwarded to current Eurozone countries, who are anticipated to give their final consent later in the day.
