Germany Condemns China for Laser Targeting German Aircraft
“The Chinese military used a laser to target a German aircraft participating in the EU operation ASPIDES,” the German Foreign Ministry declared in an official statement shared on X.
The ministry emphasized that “putting German personnel at risk and disrupting the operation is completely unacceptable,” noting that China’s ambassador in Berlin was summoned for an urgent protest over the incident.
Details reported by German magazine Spiegel reveal the targeted aircraft was a German reconnaissance plane leased specifically for this mission. The confrontation took place near the Yemeni coast, as the plane approached a Chinese frigate.
German officials told Spiegel that the Chinese frigate crew violated established protocols by failing to use emergency communication channels before directing a laser at the aircraft.
There has been no immediate response from Chinese authorities regarding the event.
The EU’s ASPIDES operation in the Red Sea is designed to safeguard this vital shipping lane from attacks by Houthi forces, who have increasingly targeted commercial vessels to hinder Western backing of Israel’s conflict in Gaza.
Currently, around 700 German troops are involved in the mission, with the German parliament having extended their deployment through October 2025 earlier this year.
