Fire Erupts at Egypt Telecom Hub, Leaving Four Dead, 27 Injured

(MENAFN) A devastating fire erupted Monday at a central telecommunications hub in downtown Cairo, claiming the lives of at least four individuals and leaving 27 others injured, according to a statement from Egypt's Health Ministry released Tuesday.

Those hurt in the blaze were transported to local hospitals for treatment, while others received medical attention on site for smoke-related issues, the ministry confirmed.

The fire ignited Monday afternoon within a critical telecommunications center linked to Telecom Egypt, located in the Ramses district of Cairo. The incident led to temporary outages in telephone and internet services across sections of the capital and other parts of the country.

In a Tuesday statement, Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat, assured the public that "services will be gradually restored within 24 hours."

Flight operations at Cairo International Airport, which had experienced delays overnight due to communication failures, have now returned to full capacity, according to Egypt's Ministry of Civil Aviation.

"All affected flights have taken off and operations at all terminals at Cairo airport have returned to normal," the ministry reported.

A security official informed a state-run news agency that early findings point to an electrical short circuit as the likely cause of the fire. Forensic teams are set to examine the site to determine the definitive cause.
