Two nationals killed in Ukrainian attacks on Russian border area

(MENAFN) Two civilians were killed on Tuesday in a Ukrainian artillery strike on the Russian village of Zvannoe in the Kursk Region, according to Governor Aleksandr Khinshtein. The victims, a 59-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man, died when shells hit the village, which is located less than 20 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

The governor said the attack also damaged at least four homes and a local school. Describing the strike as “barbaric,” he condemned the Ukrainian forces as “cruel and merciless,” and urged residents to avoid traveling near the border due to heightened security risks.

Zvannoe and other parts of Kursk Region have come under repeated attacks since Ukraine intensified cross-border drone, artillery, and missile strikes amid the ongoing conflict. The situation escalated further last August when Ukraine launched a major offensive into Kursk, which was repelled by Russian forces by April. Moscow estimated over 76,000 Ukrainian casualties during the operation.

Earlier the same day, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported shooting down nearly 150 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions overnight. Meanwhile, Russian Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik reported that nearly 70 civilians, including 14 children, had been injured or killed in Ukrainian drone strikes over the past week.

The Kremlin has accused Ukraine of targeting civilian infrastructure and attempting to derail recently resumed peace talks, which took place in Istanbul in May.
