Russia Urges EU to Change Stance on Ukraine War

(MENAFN) During a press briefing in Moscow on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed optimism that the European Union might eventually adopt a more constructive attitude toward the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

The remarks came after discussions with Mozambique’s Foreign Minister, Maria Manuela Lucas.

Lavrov highlighted the shift in U.S. policy following the transition from President Joe Biden’s administration to that of President Donald Trump, characterizing Trump’s stance as more “reasonable.”

Lavrov noted that the “reasonable approach” demonstrated by the current U.S. leadership includes a readiness to engage in conversation and to genuinely listen.

He contrasted this with the previous administration, which he claimed aligned closely with what he described as the “unhinged Europeans.”

According to Lavrov, “I really hope that the reasonable approach that the Trump administration showed in this situation after it replaced the Biden administration, which spoke in unison with the unhinged Europeans... will not go unnoticed by the Europeans,” despite ongoing talks about further military support for the Ukrainian government “at the expense of… European taxpayers.”

Although President Trump has repeatedly pledged to bring the conflict between Moscow and Kiev to a conclusion, he acknowledged last month that achieving peace had turned out to be “more difficult than people would have any idea.”

So far, the direct discussions between Russia and Ukraine, which were initiated by the U.S. administration, have not produced any meaningful breakthroughs.

These talks have mainly centered on humanitarian concerns such as exchanging prisoners and recovering the remains of fallen soldiers.
