White House Seeks Alternatives to SpaceX
Once close allies during the 2024 election campaign, former President Trump and Musk have experienced a sharp fallout in recent months.
The discord originated over Trump’s $5 trillion “big, beautiful” budget bill, which Musk openly opposed.
In retaliation, Trump accused Musk of receiving excessive federal subsidies and threatened to revoke SpaceX’s government contracts.
SpaceX has been a key player in U.S. defense communications through its Starlink and Starshield satellite networks, and was anticipated to construct essential parts of the Golden Dome system.
Back in April, the news outlet noted that SpaceX was a leading contender for the project, competing alongside Palantir and Anduril.
Nevertheless, Trump appears to be acting on his warning to withdraw Musk’s contracts, as per the latest report by the news outlet.
Officials within the Pentagon and White House are reportedly engaging with other firms to lessen dependence on Musk’s company.
Amazon’s Project Kuiper has been approached by the administration, despite having launched only a small portion of its intended satellite array.
Other potential candidates include Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, as well as emerging rocket companies like Rocket Lab and Stoke Space.
