Syria calls on Turkey to assist in making defense stronger
(MENAFN) The Syrian government has formally reached out to Türkiye for assistance in enhancing its defense capabilities and tackling terrorist groups, particularly ISIS, according to sources from Türkiye’s National Defense Ministry.
“In line with this request, we continue to work to provide training, consultancy, and technical support to increase Syria's defense capacity,” said the ministry sources.
They also emphasized, “Türkiye's primary goal is to support Syria's political unity and territorial integrity and to lead efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region.”
When asked about the recent unrest in Suwayda province and Israeli airstrikes on Damascus, sources pointed out that Israel’s intensified military actions have worsened tensions between the southern Druze population and the central government.
Türkiye, the sources added, remains committed to upholding Syria’s sovereignty, promoting stability, and confronting terrorism in all its forms.
The violence in Suwayda began on July 13, when clashes erupted between Bedouin Arab tribes and armed Druze groups. The situation escalated further as Israeli forces carried out airstrikes targeting Syrian army sites and key infrastructure, including in Damascus.
Israel has defended its military actions by citing the “protection of Druze communities.” However, according to reports, most Druze leaders inside Syria have rejected any form of outside involvement and expressed continued loyalty to a united Syrian state.
A ceasefire agreement was reached on Saturday, bringing a temporary halt to the fighting.
Following the removal of former regime leader Bashar al-Assad on December 8, 2024, the new Syrian administration has focused on restoring stability and asserting control across the country.
