US senator affirms Israel will ‘do in Gaza what we did in Tokyo and Berlin’
According to Graham, Israel no longer believes it can reach a satisfactory resolution with Hamas through negotiations. Washington reportedly shares this view, with the senator stating that “there’s no way to negotiate an end of this war with Hamas,” as peace talks remain stalled.
“They’re going to do in Gaza what we did in Tokyo and Berlin,” Graham stated, implying Israel may seize the territory by force and rebuild it under its control. He also mentioned the possibility of offering Hamas fighters safe passage out of Gaza in exchange for the release of Israeli hostages.
Earlier this week, US special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff announced that American negotiators were returning home for consultations, accusing Hamas of lacking the will to reach a ceasefire. The US had proposed a 60-day truce during which Hamas would release 10 living hostages and the remains of 18 others in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
The talks have collapsed due to diverging demands. Hamas insists on a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, while Israel maintains it will not stop its military campaign until Hamas disarms and relinquishes power.
The conflict, which began in October 2023 after a Hamas attack killed 1,200 people in southern Israel, has since resulted in more than 59,000 Palestinian deaths, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Amid continued fighting, reports have surfaced suggesting Israel may pursue a permanent occupation of Gaza and possibly relocate its 2.3 million residents.
