Ghana Reports First Fatality Linked to Mpox

(MENAFN) On Sunday, Ghana's Health Service confirmed the nation's inaugural death linked to mpox.

In a statement posted on X, Ghana’s health officials reported 23 additional infections, pushing the cumulative total to 257 cases as of July 22.

Mpox, a viral illness transmitted from animals to humans, was initially identified in people in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern for the second time on August 14, 2024.

This urgent designation came in response to rising mpox infections and fatalities, particularly driven by the more dangerous Clade I variant, affecting Congo and surrounding African nations.
