Thailand, Cambodia Conflict Results in Increasing Deaths

(MENAFN) The death count resulting from persistent skirmishes between Cambodian and Thai troops climbed to 35 on Sunday, while U.S. President Donald Trump urged a halt to hostilities between the two nations in Southeast Asia.

Thailand issued an updated casualty report, disclosing that 22 individuals had lost their lives—comprising 14 civilians and eight military personnel—alongside 140 reported injuries.

This information was reported by an English-language newspaper based in Thailand.

Meanwhile, the fatality count in Cambodia remained at 13.

Large numbers of civilians from both countries were forced to leave their homes, as evacuations continued on both sides of the border.

According to a news outlet, a spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense, Maly Socheata, accused Thai troops of continuing to “invade Cambodian territory,” and alleged that Thai artillery and rocket fire had struck locations within Cambodian borders.

On a separate note, a news agency quoted Thai military spokesperson Richa Suksuvanon, who stated that Cambodian troops had launched artillery attacks on multiple areas, damaging essential infrastructure.

Suksuvanon further declared that Thailand "will only cease fire when Cambodia comes to negotiate,” implying that the hostilities between the neighboring countries had extended into a fourth consecutive day.

On Saturday, President Trump held discussions with the leaders of both Cambodia and Thailand.

He appealed for immediate peace talks and stated that both sides had agreed to enter ceasefire negotiations.
