UK Records Highest Phone Theft in Europe

(MENAFN) According to data compiled by the US insurer SquareTrade, nearly 40% of all mobile phone theft claims across Europe originate from the UK, as reported by a news agency on Friday.

The research, which analyzes claims from SquareTrade’s twelve European markets, reveals that the UK has become a hotspot for phone thefts despite its smaller share of the insurer's clientele.

The report highlights that London alone accounts for nearly half of the mobile phone thefts in the country.

Specifically, the UK represents 39% of all mobile phone thefts across Europe, despite British customers constituting just 10% of SquareTrade’s customer base.

Since June 2021, claims of mobile phone theft in Britain have skyrocketed by 425%, with 42% of these incidents occurring in London.

The data also shows that these thefts are most prevalent in the summer months and around Christmas, correlating with periods of heavy travel, festivals, and seasonal shopping.

Additionally, Birmingham recorded the second-highest number of phone thefts in the country, further contributing to the growing trend.

Supporting this, official statistics from the Crime Survey for England and Wales confirm a 50% rise in "theft from the person" for the year ending December 2024, with mobile phones emerging as the most frequently stolen item.

This represents a total of 483,000 reported thefts across the country.
