Spain records its "most intense" heat wave

(MENAFN) Spain has recorded its “most intense” heat wave over the 16-day period from August 3 to 18, according to the country’s meteorological agency.

"The recent heat wave has been the most intense since records began in Spain," the agency said on social media platform X.

Temperatures during this period were 4.6 °C (8.1 °F) above the seasonal average, surpassing the previous record set in July 2022 of 4.5 °C (8.1 °F). The first 20 days of August 2025 marked the warmest August 1–20 period since at least 1961, while the August 8–17 stretch was the hottest in Spain since at least 1950. January to August temperatures ranked as the second highest on record, after 2024.

Highlighting the growing frequency and severity of heat waves, the agency attributed the trend to climate change. "That four of the five most intense heat waves have occurred since 2019 is not a coincidence. Not every summer will always be warmer than the previous one; however, the trend toward more extreme summers is clear. The keys: adaptation and climate change mitigation," it said.

Temperatures are expected to rise in the coming days, though a possible decline could occur by the end of the month. Spain continues to battle wildfires that began in early August. While the situation has improved, 15 fires remain active in the northwest.
