Pakistan Reports Forces Killed 9 Suspected Militants

(MENAFN) At least nine suspected militants have been killed during an ongoing counterinsurgency operation in Pakistan’s restive northwest, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

City police chief Bilal Haider told reporters that the suspected militants were killed over the past three days in Upper Dir, a district in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near the Afghan border.

The clashes come amid a broader security sweep in the adjacent Bajaur tribal district. According to officials, that area has become a stronghold for militants linked to the banned group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), prompting intensified military engagement.

The crackdown unfolds as Pakistan grapples with a sharp rise in extremist violence in recent years. Officials in Islamabad blame the surge on “Afghanistan-based” militant factions — a claim Kabul has firmly rejected.

In a separate incident in the mineral-rich but volatile Balochistan province, at least three coal miners died after inhaling toxic gas inside a mine in Bolan district, rescue authorities reported.

Pakistan’s mining industry has long faced scrutiny over lax safety measures, with fatal accidents occurring frequently due to poor enforcement of regulations.
