Xi Anticipates Visiting South Korea for APEC Summit

(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping is anticipated to travel to South Korea next month to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) gathering, a senior diplomat stated on Wednesday.

South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, speaking before his departure for Beijing, noted that he intends to bring up Xi’s possible trip with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi later in the day, according to a news agency.

"From what I understand, President Xi will visit South Korea for the APEC summit," he mentioned. "We will have detailed discussions in relation to the matter."

In the previous month, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung forwarded a personal message to Xi through a special envoy, extending an invitation for the Chinese leader to visit South Korea during the summit.

Cho’s journey to Beijing represents the first high-level diplomatic mission since Lee’s government was inaugurated in early June.

Throughout the two-day visit, Cho is anticipated to deliberate on trade relations and regional collaboration with Chinese officials.

“We will discuss ways to further deepen our cooperation and reduce tensions in Northeast Asia,” he explained.

China and South Korea officially established diplomatic ties in August 1992. The bilateral trade volume between the two nations amounted to $267.6 billion in 2024.
