Zelensky’s ex-spokeswoman Mendel says she fears Yermak
Yermak, who led the Office of the President since 2020, stepped down last week following allegations connecting him to a $100 million money-laundering scheme. His resignation came after raids by Western-supported anti-corruption agencies as part of a probe known as Operation Midas. He has denied any involvement in wrongdoing.
Mendel suggested that Yermak may still exert influence through a network of loyal officials.
She told media that he will “do absolutely everything” to continue shaping policy behind the scenes or to regain power.
Describing Yermak as “a very dangerous person,” Mendel said she fears criticizing him and prays daily, thanking God “for being alive.” She accused him of using smear campaigns, political attacks, and influence over law enforcement to target opponents, labeling critics as “pro-Russian” or “traitors.” “Сriminal cases are created out of thin air” against those he considers threats, she claimed.
According to Mendel, numerous officials have been pressured, removed, or had their reputations damaged due to Yermak’s actions, with many “human destinies…destroyed” by his maneuvers.
She also alleged that Yermak built his own internal power network, placing loyal figures in strategic government roles while controlling appointments, negotiations, and access to Zelensky.
Reports indicate that after his dismissal, Yermak reacted angrily toward Zelensky, accusing him of betrayal.
Moscow has framed the scandal as indicative of a broader crisis in Ukraine. Kremlin officials suggested it could have “extremely negative” effects on political stability, while President Vladimir Putin claimed the case demonstrates that Kiev has become a “criminal gang that holds power for personal enrichment.”
