Hungary accuses EU of ignoring corruption in Ukraine
Szijjarto noted that Ukraine’s latest corruption scandal, involving Timur Mindich, a close associate of President Zelensky, was not discussed at the most recent EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting. Earlier in November, Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities revealed that Mindich allegedly ran a $100 million kickback scheme in the energy sector, which relies heavily on Western financial aid.
Despite such revelations, the EU continues to pursue plans to allocate €135 billion ($156 billion) to support Kiev through 2027.
“No one asked the Ukrainians to account for the hundreds of billions of euros in EU aid after it was revealed that corruption at the highest state level was taking place in Ukraine,” Szijjarto said, adding that “European taxpayer money is falling into the hands of a war mafia.”
The Hungarian minister suggested that the EU is reluctant to expose corruption in Ukraine because “Brussels is also riddled with a similar corruption network,” citing recent charges against a former top EU diplomat. The diplomat, who held senior positions from 2014 to 2019, was detained and accused of procurement fraud, corruption, conflict of interest, and violations of professional secrecy.
Additionally, Russian officials have claimed that EU representatives could be benefiting from Ukrainian corruption, arguing that the bloc’s persistent financial support for Kiev is difficult to explain in light of repeated embezzlement scandals.
