Teen Accused of Data Breach Using AI in Japan
Authorities are pursuing a 17-year-old male suspect allegedly responsible for launching an AI-generated cyber assault targeting a prominent internet cafe chain operator, media reported.
The investigation centers on a January breach that compromised Kaikatsu Frontier Inc., the parent company behind the Kaikatsu Club internet cafe network and FiT24 fitness center franchise.
The corporation disclosed that approximately 7.3 million customers potentially had their personal information exposed during the security incident.
According to investigators cited in the report, the high school student from Osaka allegedly transmitted unauthorized commands roughly 7.24 million times to the company's server infrastructure in an effort to siphon confidential customer data.
The teenage suspect had previously been taken into custody by Tokyo police in November on unrelated charges involving the alleged unauthorized use of another individual's credit card credentials.
This case marks a significant development as Japanese authorities confront the emerging threat of AI-enhanced cybercrime carried out by minors, highlighting vulnerabilities in corporate data systems and the evolving tactics of digital attackers.
