Russia condemns attacks on ships near Turkey

(MENAFN) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin stated on Wednesday that attacks on ships within Türkiye’s exclusive economic zone “deserve condemnation,” describing them as unacceptable and terrorist acts. In an interview with RTVI TV, he emphasized that such incidents undermine stability and are contrary to efforts to address the conflict’s root causes.

Vershinin noted that Russia values Türkiye’s role as a mediator, referencing the last three rounds of negotiations in Istanbul, and expressed confidence that Ankara’s mediation potential would not be diminished. He added that Russia opposes the delivery of weapons to the conflict zone, which it sees as destabilizing.

The comments follow three incidents in late November and early December. On Dec. 2, the Russian vessel Midvolga 2 was attacked by a drone 80 nautical miles from the Turkish coast, sustaining minor damage. Earlier, on Nov. 28, the tankers Kairos and Virat were attacked 28 and 38 nautical miles from the Turkish coast, causing fire and hull damage.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the attacks on Dec. 1 as an alarming escalation, while Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova also labeled them terrorist acts, accusing Ukrainian intelligence services of responsibility after videos of the incidents were published.
