CENTCOM launches first one-way drone attack squadron in Middle East

(MENAFN) U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on Wednesday revealed the formation of a new task force built to oversee the military’s first dedicated squadron of one way attack drones, positioned in the Middle East.

According to general statements, the initiative—named Task Force Scorpion Strike (TFSS)—was created roughly four months after the U.S. defense secretary directed an accelerated push to acquire and field lower cost unmanned systems.

CENTCOM noted that TFSS has already established a squadron operating the Low cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS), a class of drones designed for autonomous missions across long distances. These systems can be launched through several methods, including catapults, rocket assisted setups, and mobile land based or vehicle platforms.

Adm. Brad Cooper, the commander of CENTCOM, said, “This new task force sets the conditions for using innovation as a deterrent.” He added that, “Equipping our skilled warfighters faster with cutting-edge drone capabilities showcases U.S. military innovation and strength, which deters bad actors.”
