Putin labels US-Ukraine meeting 'necessary and beneficial’
According to general reports, Putin told an Indian television outlet that the five hour conversation with U.S. negotiators Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner was essential for reviewing each element of U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed peace framework. He said the initiative draws heavily on understandings reached during his earlier meeting with Trump in Alaska.
As he put it, “What our American colleagues brought was based, one way or another, on the agreements we reached during my meeting with President Trump in Alaska; we discussed these issues at the Anchorage meeting.”
Putin remarked that Trump is actively seeking a compromise on Ukraine, though he stressed that achieving one is far from simple. He said he supports certain aspects of the U.S. plan while opposing others, describing the overall effort as “a complex work.”
Asked whether the original 28 point proposal remains relevant, Putin said, “Exactly these points are being discussed.” He added that the points were divided into four thematic packages but otherwise remain unchanged.
Turning to Europe, Putin argued that EU states should contribute constructively to the negotiation process instead of obstructing it.
He also reiterated Moscow’s long-standing claim that the conflict could have been avoided if Kyiv had pulled its troops from Donbas early on. Putin said, “We immediately told Ukraine, to Ukrainian troops—people do not want to live with you; they went to vote in a referendum, voted for independence, withdraw your troops and there will be no military action. No, they prefer to fight. Well, now they've fought themselves into a corner.”
The Russian leader insisted that Moscow intends to take full control of Donbass and the broader region it calls Novorossiya. As he stated, “Russia will liberate Donbass and Novorossiya either by military means or otherwise.”
He added that the situation ultimately hinges on one of two outcomes: “Either we will liberate these territories by military means, or Ukrainian troops will leave these territories and stop fighting there.”
