Cuba Declares Mourning After Loss of Fighters in US Operation

(MENAFN) Cuba announced on Sunday that 32 of its soldiers were killed during a United States military action, which Washington characterized as a “large-scale strike.” The offensive led to the detention of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro.

Cuban leader Miguel Diaz-Canel proclaimed that January 5 and 6 would be observed as national mourning days, commemorating the fighters who, he stated, fulfilled their responsibilities with dignity and displayed “fierce resistance,” symbolizing Cuba’s enduring tradition of international solidarity.

Authorities in Havana explained that those who perished were engaged in official assignments under the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior. They had been deployed at the request of Venezuelan officials as part of bilateral collaboration.

The Venezuelan administration also honored the deceased, declaring from Caracas that it “honors the 32 Cuban combatants who gave their lives in the fulfillment of their duty, in the context of cooperation and defense missions.”

US President Donald Trump remarked earlier that a considerable number of Cuban security agents tasked with safeguarding Maduro were killed during Saturday’s assault.

Maduro, accompanied by his spouse Cilia Flores, reached New York late Saturday and is currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. American prosecutors allege the couple is facing federal accusations tied to narcotics trafficking and supposed collaboration with groups labeled as terrorist organizations.

Maduro has denied these claims, while Venezuelan representatives have demanded the immediate liberation of the pair, condemning the operation as unlawful and a breach of Venezuela’s sovereignty.
