South Korea Reports Three New ASF Cases

(MENAFN) South Korea reported three new African swine fever (ASF) infections on Friday, driving the nation's 2026 outbreak total to 14 confirmed cases, media disclosed.

The latest outbreaks emerged across three provinces: a pig farm in Jeongeup within North Jeolla Province, another in Gimcheon located in North Gyeongsang Province, and a third facility in Hongseong, South Chungcheong Province, according to media.

The country documented its initial 2026 case on Jan. 16.

To prevent further viral spread, the central disaster management headquarters for ASF announced plans to slaughter approximately 10,000 pigs housed at the three infected facilities.

A two-day movement ban has been implemented for pig farms and associated operations within affected zones and surrounding regions, restricting all livestock transport for 48 hours.

Nationwide surveillance will target roughly 4,800 pig farms through Feb. 28, authorities confirmed. Officials cautioned that transmission risks could intensify during next week's Lunar New Year celebrations, when heightened travel and agricultural activity traditionally occur.
