Turkey Intensifies Efforts to Tackle Marine Pollution

(MENAFN) Türkiye’s ongoing efforts to tackle marine pollution have resulted in the removal of 325,000 tons of waste across 28 coastal provinces, with increased inspections and monitoring at sea, according to information compiled from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change’s 2025 Annual Activity Report.

The cleanup is being carried out as part of the “Zero Waste Blue initiative,” launched on June 10, 2019, under the guidance of first lady Emine Erdogan. The program follows the framework of the “Provincial Marine Litter Action Plans” and combines hands-on cleanup operations with educational and communication campaigns. Its main objectives are to reduce marine pollution, prevent waste at its source, and raise public awareness.

Monitoring of wastewater treatment plants has been strengthened, with 24/7 online supervision for all facilities with a capacity of 1,000 cubic meters or more. In the Marmara Sea alone, the number of monitoring points has increased to 150, while in the Gulf of Izmit, 1.85 million square meters of marine area have been surveyed, and 1.62 million cubic meters of bottom sediment have been cleared. These efforts make it one of the most extensive environmental and maritime projects in Europe.

Authorities continue to address both land- and sea-based sources of pollution across Türkiye’s waters, with particular focus on the Marmara Sea, aiming to improve water quality and safeguard marine ecosystems for the future.
