Trump Reportedly Rejects Iranian Proposal on Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump is reportedly unhappy with a proposal from Iran aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and bringing an end to the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran, according to a report published on Monday.

A media outlet reported, citing unnamed officials familiar with the matter, that Trump was briefed on Tehran’s plan during a White House Situation Room meeting earlier in the day.

The proposal allegedly includes provisions for the US to lift its blockade on the strategically vital waterway in exchange for steps toward de-escalation.

However, the plan reportedly does not address Iran’s nuclear program. According to multiple US and Iranian officials cited in the report, Tehran has maintained that it has the right under international law to continue uranium enrichment and has refused demands to completely halt or surrender already enriched material.

While the specific reasons for Trump’s dissatisfaction were not detailed, he has previously insisted on strict conditions related to Iran’s nuclear activities. An unnamed US official suggested that agreeing to the proposal could be seen as politically costly, arguing it would deny the president a public diplomatic win.

White House spokesperson Olivia Wales told the newspaper: “The United States will not negotiate through the press — we have been clear about our red lines and the president will only make a deal that’s good for the American people and the world.”

The proposal was first reported by a news agency on Sunday, which said it was delivered by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi through Pakistani mediators. Under the reported terms, a ceasefire would be extended or made permanent, while nuclear negotiations would only begin after restrictions are lifted and the Strait of Hormuz is reopened.
