UN Releases Emergency Funding to Aid Mozambique Amid Conflict

(MENAFN) The United Nations has allocated close to $98 million in emergency humanitarian funding to assist communities in Mozambique affected by ongoing conflict and extreme weather disasters, according to reports.

UN Humanitarian Coordinator Catherine Sozi said in a statement on Monday that the funding is intended to address urgent needs on the ground. She explained:
"This funding will help address urgent community needs, including food for families who have lost their crops and income, safe drinking water for communities where water sources have been flooded or contaminated, and health care for people cut off from basic services."

Mozambique continues to face a combination of crises, including armed conflict in the northern Cabo Delgado province, which has forced thousands of families to flee their homes and disrupted local livelihoods. At the same time, severe flooding and cyclones in central and southern regions have caused widespread destruction, damaging homes, contaminating water supplies, and disrupting essential infrastructure.

Sozi added that part of the emergency funding will go toward providing shelter and basic support for people who have lost their homes. She also stressed that protection efforts will remain a priority, particularly for women, children, and individuals exposed to violence and other risks.

“This funding will contribute to the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, which requires $534 million to reach 1.7 million people with humanitarian assistance across the country,” she said.

The allocation comes as humanitarian agencies continue to respond to overlapping emergencies in Mozambique, where both natural disasters and insecurity are driving growing humanitarian needs.
