Americans Express Growing Concern Over Advanced AI Risks

(MENAFN) A majority of Americans believe advanced artificial intelligence carries at least a moderate possibility of eventually causing humanity’s destruction, according to a poll released Wednesday, reflecting growing public concern about the rapid progress of AI technology.

Around two-thirds of those surveyed said they see at least a moderate risk from highly advanced AI. This included 17% who considered such an outcome “almost certain” and another 20% who described the threat as “significant.” A further 26% assessed the risk as moderate.

Concerns were recorded across different political affiliations, age groups and genders. Among people who voted in the 2024 presidential election, 70% of those who supported Democratic candidate Kamala Harris said they saw at least a moderate risk, compared with 60% of voters who backed Donald Trump. Trump has previously played down concerns surrounding AI.

The poll also showed stronger public support for slowing the pace of AI development than for continuing to pursue increasingly sophisticated systems.

According to the survey, 48% of respondents said AI is “good enough” and that development should be temporarily halted to limit potential risks. Meanwhile, 31% favored continued progress, arguing that more advanced AI could deliver substantial benefits.

Support for pausing development was reported at 58% among Harris voters, compared with 44% among Trump voters.
